History

Little is known about the history of the stealthy, secretive ninjas. Most of the historians who have attempted to put their story on paper have either changed their minds shortly after starting the effort, or passed away before they had completed it. They therefore remain sort of a legion of legends. They are thought to have arisen in the twelfth century, from poor peasants oppressed by their powerful samurai landlords. The ninja had to use their wits and little else, lacking the money and weapons of the powerful samurai. It was a classic case of the wits versus the wit-outs. They soon became such proficient assassins that the samurai hired them. At the top of the ninjas new list of job duties was: stop killing samurai . . . at least the ones that paid you. By the start of the Edo period (1603-1868) Japan was starting to run out of space to bury their victims. This led to a collapse in demand for their services and the tools of their trade. Their tradition lives on, however, and has recently been popularized in movies and other popular culture.
